Morocco Visa Requirements: Do You Need One?

Morocco has one of the more relaxed entry policies in the region: citizens of over 60 countries, including the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, and most of Latin America, can enter visa-free for tourism and stay up to 90 days. If you're unsure whether your passport qualifies, check the current list on Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before booking, since exemption lists do occasionally change.

What You Actually Need at the Border

Assuming you're visa-exempt, entry is straightforward: a passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date, a return or onward ticket (rarely checked but good to have on hand), and sometimes proof of accommodation for your first few nights. You'll fill out a short arrival card on the plane or at immigration and get a passport stamp — there's no separate visa sticker or fee to arrange in advance.

If You're Not Visa-Exempt

Travelers from countries not on the exemption list need to apply for a visa in advance through a Moroccan consulate or embassy in their home country. This typically requires a completed application form, passport photos, proof of accommodation and return travel, and processing can take one to two weeks, so it's not something to leave until the week before departure.

Extending Your Stay

Want to stay longer than 90 days? Officially, extensions are handled through a local police station (bureau des étrangers) or immigration office, though the process can be slow and inconsistent depending on the city. Many long-stay travelers instead do a short "visa run" to Spain, the Canary Islands, or another neighboring country and re-enter for a fresh 90 days — check current rules before relying on this, as enforcement varies.

Customs Basics

Standard duty-free allowances apply for personal items, alcohol (non-Muslim residents/tourists), and gifts. Large amounts of undeclared cash, drones (which require pre-approval to fly), and any medication that could be mistaken for a controlled substance are the main things worth double-checking before you fly, since Moroccan customs treats these more strictly than many travelers expect.
