A small, efficient airport just 6km from the medina — here's how to get through it smoothly and into the city without overpaying.
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is Morocco's busiest tourist gateway, known for its striking lattice-patterned terminal roof and, less charmingly, for queues at immigration during peak arrival windows. It's small enough that once you're through passport control, everything else — baggage, exit, transport — is a short walk, not a trek.
Have your passport and completed arrival card ready (often handed out on the plane); if not, forms are available just before the immigration desks. Peak season mornings and evenings can mean 30–60 minute queues, so build a buffer into any tight onward connection. Baggage claim is straightforward and generally fast once you're through passport control.
ATMs and currency exchange desks sit in the arrivals hall before and after customs — rates are broadly comparable to in-town options, so there's no strong reason to wait if you need cash immediately. Withdraw slightly more cash than you think you'll need for day one — taxis, tips, and your first meal are all cash transactions, and you don't want to be hunting for an ATM at 11pm on arrival night.
The medina is only about 6km away, roughly a 15–20 minute drive depending on traffic. Official petit taxis operate from a rank just outside arrivals — insist on the metered rate or agree a fixed price before getting in, since airport taxi drivers are the most likely to quote inflated "tourist" fares. A pre-booked private or shared transfer, arranged before you fly, removes this negotiation entirely and typically costs about the same as a fair taxi fare.
The two most common issues at Marrakech airport: taxi drivers quoting 2–3x the fair rate to unsuspecting arrivals, and unofficial "porters" who grab your bag uninvited and then demand a tip. Politely but firmly decline unsolicited help with your luggage, and don't feel awkward walking past the first taxi tout you meet to find a metered one or your pre-booked driver instead.
Most riads are inside the medina, where vehicles can't reach the door — your driver will typically drop you at the nearest accessible point, and someone from the riad meets you to walk you in the last stretch.
