Both routes end in Sahara dunes — but the journey, the dunes themselves, and the crowds are genuinely different.
Almost every Marrakech-based Sahara trip heads toward one of two gateway towns: Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, or Zagora, near the smaller Erg Zehar dunes and the road toward the more remote Erg Chigaga. Both deliver a genuine desert camp experience, but the routes, dune scale, and overall feel differ enough to be worth understanding before you book.
Merzouga is the more established, more popular route, reached via the dramatic Dades and Todra Gorges over roughly 8–9 hours of driving from Marrakech (usually split across 2–3 days with stops). Erg Chebbi's dunes are tall — some over 150 metres — and directly accessible from a cluster of desert camps right at the dune's edge, meaning a short camel ride gets you deep into genuinely striking scenery. It's also the more developed and sociable of the two routes, with a wider choice of camps and a livelier camp-night atmosphere.
Zagora is closer to Marrakech (around 6–7 hours), making it the faster option if time is tight. However, the dunes immediately near Zagora town (Erg Zehar) are noticeably smaller and less dramatic than Erg Chebbi. The truly big dunes near Zagora — Erg Chigaga — require an additional multi-hour 4x4 transfer beyond Zagora itself, which adds cost and time back into the route. Zagora trips tend to be quieter and less touristy simply because fewer operators run there compared to Merzouga.
If dune height and that classic "postcard Sahara" look matter most to you, Merzouga's Erg Chebbi wins clearly. If you're short on time and want a taste of the desert without the full multi-day commitment, Zagora's closer dunes are the practical compromise.
Merzouga trips are generally similar in price to Zagora trips for a comparable number of days, since Merzouga's extra distance is offset by more competition among camps and operators keeping prices sharp. Reaching Erg Chigaga's bigger dunes near Zagora tends to push costs up due to the additional 4x4 transfer, occasionally landing close to or above Merzouga pricing for a similar quality of dune scenery.
For a first Sahara trip with a few days to spare, Merzouga is the well-trodden, reliably spectacular choice — it's why the vast majority of shared group departures, including all of ours, route through it. If you've already done a Merzouga-style trip before and want something quieter and less touristed, or you're genuinely tight on time, Zagora is worth considering, ideally with the Erg Chigaga add-on rather than stopping at the smaller near-town dunes.
